Alexandre Martin awarded EPSRC Standard Grant
Dr. Alexandre Martin(Heriot-Watt) received an EPSRC Standard Grant in total value of £620K to work on the project titled “The Geometry of the Isomorphism Problem for Artin Groups.” The project will commence in September 2025, last for 3 years and involve a postdoctoral fellow.
Lorenzo Pareschi receives €2 million funding to help predict the unexpected
Prof. Lorenzo Pareschi, Chair of Applied Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University, received an Advanced Grant from the Italian Science Fund (FIS) in value of 2 million euros to study and better understand and predict complex phenomena such as epidemics, traffic, the economy and even how opinions spread on social media. See details here.
Víctor Elvira secures £1m ARIA funding to forecast climate tipping points
Víctor Elvira, Chair of Statistics and Data Science, has been awarded £1 million by Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) to investigate and forecast climate tipping points — thresholds that, once crossed, will likely lead to cascading and irreversible changes to Earth’s climate. Major parts of the Earth system are at risk of crossing climate […]
John Pearson awarded EPSRC Standard Grant
John Pearson has been awarded funding from EPSRC for his project “Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra for Optimization and Control of PDEs”. The project is in collaboration with Stefan Güttel, University of Manchester and a PDRA will be employed at both institutions to work on the project. Partial differential equations (PDEs) are used to describe mathematically […]
EPSRC Successes for Heriot-Watt’s Marcelo Pereyra and Michela Ottobre
Professors Marcelo Pereyra and Michela Ottobre of Heriot-Watt University have been recently awarded EPSRC funding for their research. Many congratulations to both! Prof. Pereyra has received a 5 year, £1.5 million, EPSRC Fellowship to work on “Learned Quantitative Stochastic Imaging”. Click here for more information. Prof. Ottobre will be working on Applied Stochastic Analysis with […]
LMS Whitehead Prize for Dr Alessandro Sisto
In June 2024, Alessandro Sisto of Heriot-Watt University was awarded a Whitehead Prize by the London Mathematical Society for his outstanding contributions to geometric group theory, particularly his groundbreaking work on hierarchically hyperbolic spaces, together with Behrstock and Hagen. This work makes it possible to understand the large-scale geometry of many groups and spaces, modelled […]
Prof. Ivan Cheltsov Awarded Simons Foundation Grant
Professor Ivan Cheltsov, Personal Chair in Birational Geometry at the University of Edinburgh, has received a grant from the Simons Foundation as part of the Simons Collaboration on Moduli of Varieties. The Collaboration is led by James McKernan at the University of California, San Diego with the other PIs at Imperial College, Utah, Princeton, Michigan, […]
ERC Starting Grant Success
Dr Kaibo Hu, Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, has successfully received funding for his ERC Starting Grant “GeoFEM: Geometric Finite Element Methods”. The project will address the fundamental problem of discretising high-order tensors by bringing together geometry, algebra, PDEs and numerical analysis to develop an algebraic framework and a systematic […]
