Numerical approximations for fully nonlinear second order elliptic and parabolic equations: A lecture series by N. Krylov
27th October 2011, 3-4pm. Lecture 1: On the rate of convergence of finite-difference approximations for Bellman's equations with constant coefficients.
We prove that the typical rate of convergence is not worse than h1/3, where h is the mesh size, and for special difference approximations it becomes h1/2.
3rd November 2011, 4-5pm. Lecture 2. Lecture Theatre C (James Clerk Maxwell Building). There will be tea and biscuits in the Mathematics common room, 5212, at 3:30pm.
Notes from Lectures 1 and 2 are avaiable here.
10th November 2011, 4-5pm. Lecture 3. Lecture Theatre C (James Clerk Maxwell Building). There will be tea and biscuits in the Mathematics common room, 5212, at 3:30pm.
CANPDE Workshop on Mathematical Ecology, Wednesday 9th November 2011
ICMS, 15 South College Street, Edinburgh
Scientific organiser: Prof Jonathan Sherratt, Heriot-Watt University
This half-day workshop will showcase recent research on the application of mathematics to ecology. It is timed to coincide with the visit to Edinburgh of Professor Mark Lewis (University of Alberta). The workshop is supported by CANPDE (Centre for Analysis and Nonlinear PDEs).
Registration: The workshop is free (including lunch) but to enable us to monitor numbers it is necessary to register, at the following website: http://icms.org.uk/workshops/ecology
Travel Support: We can reimburse travel expenses for PhD students travelling to the workshop from Scottish universities. Please keep receipts, and pick up an expenses form at the workshop.
Timetable:
12.30 - 1.30 Lunch
1.30 - 2.00 Christina Cobbold (University of Glasgow)
From diffusion models to patch models using mean first passage time.
2.05 - 2.35 Raluca Eftimite (University of Dundee)
Pattern formation in self-organized biological aggregations with non-local interaction
2.40 - 3.10 Adam Kleczkowski (University of Stirling)
E3 - Ecology, Epidemiology and Economics: bringing human behaviour into ecological and epidemiological models
3.15 - 3.45 Tea
3.45 - 4.45 Mark Lewis (University of Alberta)
